How to Fix Missing PSD Thumbnails in Windows (Even With Maximize Compatibility On)
If you work with Photoshop a lot, you’ve probably hit this annoying problem: some of your PSD files show up with a proper thumbnail preview in File Explorer, while others just display the generic Photoshop icon.
Even when you’ve set “Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility” to Always in Photoshop, Windows Explorer can still refuse to show thumbnails. Here’s why it happens — and what you can do to fix it.
Why PSD Thumbnails Don’t Show Up in Windows
Unlike JPGs or PNGs, Windows doesn’t natively handle PSD thumbnails very well. Photoshop can embed a flattened preview inside your PSD when you save, but File Explorer often struggles to read it. That means you’ll get a random mix of working thumbnails and generic icons.
A few common reasons include:
- PSDs were saved before you enabled compatibility previews
- Thumbnail cache corruption in Windows
- Missing codecs (Windows doesn’t fully support PSD thumbnails out-of-the-box)
- Drive or Explorer glitches preventing previews from updating
Step 1: Make Sure Photoshop Is Embedding Previews
First, confirm your Photoshop settings:
- Go to Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling (Mac).
- Under File Compatibility, set Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility to Always.
👉 If this is already set, note that older PSDs saved before enabling it won’t have previews. You’ll need to re-save those files once to embed the compatibility thumbnail.
Step 2: Clear and Reset Windows Thumbnail Cache
Sometimes the preview is there, but Windows can’t display it because the thumbnail cache is corrupted.
Here is a safe way to reset it:
- Open File Explorer and paste:
- %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
- Delete all files starting with thumbcache.
- Restart your PC.
Step 3: Add Proper PSD Thumbnail Support
Because Windows doesn’t fully support PSD previews, the most reliable fix is to use a lightweight thumbnail handler:
- SageThumbs (free) – adds PSD (and 100+ formats) thumbnail support to Explorer
- IrfanView with plugins – lightweight viewer, supports PSD previews
- XnView MP – excellent file manager with PSD thumbnail support
- FastStone Image Viewer – another good free option
Step 4: Use Adobe Bridge (Alternative)
If you already have Creative Cloud, Adobe Bridge is hands-down the most reliable way to browse PSDs with thumbnails. It shows previews instantly, even for layered files.
Quick Recap
- ✅ Set Photoshop to always save with compatibility previews
- 🔄 Clear the Windows thumbnail cache to refresh broken previews
- 📦 Use SageThumbs or a similar tool for proper PSD support
- 🖥️ Or skip the hassle and manage PSDs via Adobe Bridge
With these fixes, you should finally be able to see your PSD thumbnails in Explorer again — no more guessing which file is which!
